Windows Sharepoint Services 3.0 adding users

I am a complete Sharepoint newbie and I just installed WSS 3.0. I think I will figure out most of what I want to do. However I am stuck on adding users. I can go into People and Groups and add individuals, groups. But I want to do a bulk import of all my pupils and staff. I can talk to AD fine for example I added the 2009 pupils OU fine, and can log in with any user in that OU in sharepoint. But I dont want it to be just a "pupil" group and a "staff" group.

I put permissions to authenticated users in sharepoint when the user be it teacher , staudent or admin staff log on it is as them self. Is this what you are asking??

Not really, I can add all authenticated users, but then that just add's everyone. I want to be able to add individuals to sharepoint. So I can give special permissions to certain people be it staff or pupils.

Where do I start with SharePoint permissions - There are so many different ways

 

Each Site will have its own permissions unless it is inheriting them from the above site.

 

People and Group is a little confusing - its not where you want to add users.

 

Go to your top level site, Site Actions, Site Settings. Under Permissions click on Advanced Permissions.

 

You will see 3 groups (maybe more) then click on New. You are not creating a new group you are adding users to a group. Having added your users at the top you will then have to select the group.

 

3 levels of groups

 

Vistors

Can only view the site, documents etc

 

Members

Can add, edit, delete announcements/documents etc

 

Owners

Full control, change permissions, delete the site etc

You can assign AD groups in sharepoint.

 

I just gave our "teachers" group the appropriate permissions.

 

No need to import any users, sharepoint is AD based.

Dont worry I dont think I explained it correctly. Nevermind
