wesleyw Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Does anyone know of some companies selling fixed racking that have extendable rails (not the type you get with servers) that allow the servers to be completely pulled out so that you can easily gain access to the back of said servers or other rack mountable equipments so blocks of one two three or four sections can be extended allowing full access to the server front and back. Wes
Ric_ Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 I know that my servers can be extended far enough to get to the rear of them. Are you meaning more fo a shelf type arrangement for pedestal servers or do yu just have limited space so cannot leave room behind the rack?
teejay Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 Sliding Rack Mount Server Shelves for 19" Racks For safety reasons, never slide out more than one sever at a time and that should be supported underneath to prevent the rack from toppling over.
wesleyw Posted October 3, 2008 Author Posted October 3, 2008 (edited) @Ric_ : I haven't any room behind the rack for access or will not have any once the server room is built inside our office. @teejay: The racking would be bolted to the floor and wall so this shouldn't be an issue. However your advice is understood! Really wouldn't want them to fall on me! More information is needed I think. The posts that you bolt the servers or rails to isn't a solid floor to ceiling arrangement the servers bolt to it and then it bolts to the framework of the cabinet. These sections then slide out with four or five server (for instance) in them/ Any ideas? I currently use extendible server rails but this would be more convenient. teejay Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 You could use open frame racks, which is what we've done in one of our cab rooms. It just gives you that little bit more space and you haven't got to contend with doors or side panels.
wesleyw Posted October 3, 2008 Author Posted October 3, 2008 That is of course another solution. Although the powers that be seems to want it to look neat and still have full access (Why is it never easy?). Wes
teejay Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 (edited) If the servers are in a room in your room, then security isn't an issue and to be honest the open frame racks we have look far neater and stay neater than the normal racks. The kit also stays cooler as well as you have more ventillation around the kit. Edited October 3, 2008 by teejay Spelling - EBKAC
DMcCoy Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 I really think you should reconsider and work out some way of getting access to the back of the rack. Mine has the feet and front/side stabilisers in place, but I can remove them when I need to pull the rack out. At minimum you will need the following amount of space Person, Extended server, Rack, Open rear doors, Person O |--------||||||||-----| O There are a number of rails you won't be able to fit without someone to support them and secure them from the back of the rack. UPS and large items like Blade centres especially. It is also very difficult to cable anything without have sufficient room to route and secure cables at the back. You also really need some access to the sides, but this needs less space. You may find that once it's in, any changes to the contents become impossible.
Andrew_C Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 The kit also stays cooler as well as you have more ventillation around the kit. This depends on the kit. If you have a proper cooling scheme then it may degrade the cooling if there are 'short circuits' available for the air. Probably not the case here, as we are talking schools here.
