Processor help

So we have a duff processor and I'm looking at replacing it.

 

This is the current processor:

 

Intel® Pentium® D Processor 930 - SL95X

 

This is the one that I'm looking to replace it with:

Can anybody tell me if this is compatible to work instead of the old duff one? If not can you point me in the right direction?

Its unlikley to work, your probably looking at an ebay job to be honest. Do you have any information on the system chipset or mainboard thats its going in?

I don't to hand - the machine is at the LEA HQ for repair.

 

Had a quote of £200 to fix it. I don't mind having to replace mobo and chip if that's easier. Any suggestions?

mobo = £30 from any supplier, then choice of cpu from £30 upwards, just get a mobo that supports the same memory type and speed.

 

Its likely to be a mobo issue rather than a cpu issue unless something obvious like over heating has killed it. The CPU is usually the last thing to get nuked. If it does the MOBO will have taken a greater beating first.

I would have to agree, just make sure you have DDR2 ram in there something like an E2180 should be equiv/quicker than that old PentiumD.

I have to ask...

 

£65 for a processor, £30 for a mobo, £15 for some DDR2 Ram - Thats £110, how much would a base unit only cost? Especially when you factor in the time and effort to rebuild this system and re-install Windows.

That's what I'm thinking. We're CC3 so the drivers can easily be added to the build disk.

 

We were quoted £200 from the LEA at which point I asked for it back - we have the monitor for it and everything so it would just be the case of replacing the base unit.

Replace the parts, more cost effective, it does save money in the long run. You can also assess it and could possibly use it as an upgrade path for the rest of the "suite" if need be.

 

The only decent thing buying/leasing from Dell (if anyone does) is warranty and next day repairs, other than that the long term lifeline of machines is slim.

I'm looking for the CPU/Board bundles and can't find much. There's not many places we're approved to buy from (only the likes of Misco etc).
