GP Core Failure

Hi All

 

I have recently purchased 4 machines for our Y1 and Y2 classes to play about on.

 

I formatted them and placed the schools volume license of xp onto them and deployed them out to the area where they were being used.

 

The server has all the MSI's set up so it was as simple as setting them up, logging them in, putting them on the domain and leaving them to install the software.

 

Now, for some reason, 3 out of 4 machines havent even bothered applying the computer gpo's, including the software installs, but the user gpo's are applying fine, start menu is restricted, desktop changed etc, folder redirections working fine.

 

so ive hunted around on the internet to try and find a solution and nothing i do seems to fit this problem.

 

The first thing i checked was the gpo results wizard, which comes up with

The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.

 

Note: Due to the GP Core failure, none of the other Group Policy components processed their policy. Consequently, status information for the other components is not available.

 

I looked around on the net and was told to try the rsop.msc command on the affect pc, i went down to it, and ran the command, there is a big red X on the computer policy settings but user policy settings doesnt have an x on it.

 

when i check the error report it also says the same as above.

 

Now i have looked into the local machines event viewer and for some reason it is saying it cannot contact the DC, i have pinged by name and ip and the server resolves correctly to the right IP's

 

I have removed them from the domain, dns, and readded them several times and no joy.

 

Anyone got the slightest?

Also getting this error under NetBT:

 

The name "FIELDLANE :1d" could not be registered on the Interface with IP address ##.##.##.##. The machine with the IP address ##.##.##.## did not allow the name to be claimed by this machine.

Sounds like a name or IP address conflict - If you can add them to the Domain I suspect that IP addressing is the problem. Have they by some mischance had a static IP address enables?

Is your DHCP server functioning correctly?

DHCP is not run on the server it is run by the kirklees router we have in school, but yes, it is functioning properly as this is localised to these 3 machines.

 

Checked DNS and the IPs resolve both forward and back with the correct IP's that show on the clients.

Dont know if this is relevant but the computers are connecting to the network via wireless cards. The machines are brand new.

 

Tbh im thinking about formatting them again and working on them one by one, i dont understand why this problem has happened.

Did you image these PCs or install manually on each?

What is the result of nbtstat -n on the troublesome machines?

 

The 1d in netbios is a group name for master browser, not the unique name for the machine so it's not necessarily an IP address conflict - more likely a duplicate name issue or that two or more machines are arguing over which is the master browser.

 

Edit - Just looked it up on the MS KB and "Duplicate Name Exists" Error Message When You Start a Windows XP Workstation explains it better than me!
