Explorer crashing since SP3 install

Ive been informed today that on a lot of machines, when students/staff are usign explorer to browse mapped drives (such as the shared area), explorer will suddenly close, leaving them with just the wallpaper, and then it will restart, so they have to navigate to the folder again.

 

The error message logged is:

 

"The shell stopped unexpectantly and explorer.exe was restarted"

 

Its not even logged as an error though, its logged as an information item from WINLOGON.

 

Only seems to be happening with SP3 machines.

Found a few bits on the net but nothing concrete.

 

Just wondering if anyone else has encountered this?

Are these machines from the same image? How have you installed SP3? From new or on top of an existing XP SP2 installation?

Funny you should mention that! We have been experiencing random crashes. We think it is a critical or security update but identifying which one is a problem as there is no common factor or error messages other than the 'can't reference memory' one that appears on screen.

 

It affects all our PCs but so far no laptops which leads us to a windows update problem as the laptops have not been connected to WSUS.

 

It does not matter what the user is doing and is totally random. If we pin down the culprit, I'll post it here.

I'm using an integrated CD now, but originally I think SP3 was installed on top of SP2

Well most of the problems I find are administrators installing SP3 on top of SP2. I've nearly completed re-imaging workstations at two sites with a slipstreamed XP SP3 disc and haven't (touchwood) experienced any problems.

 

I do believe that creating a slipstreamed disc produces better results, but I also find the whole process of re-imaging from new to be much better.

My biggest problem at the moment is if a user logs on for the first time and changes their password, it just goes to a black screen - on machines with SP2 or SP3.

 

Possibly a driver issue? You could try looking on Windows Update or the manufacturers website for an update.

XP SP3 caused us loads of grief.........................tip, leave it bloody off.
