KK20 Posted Friday at 10:14 Posted Friday at 10:14 I have been asked to provide an iPad for a visually impaired student. This iPad is to have a specific mathematics calculator app that the exams officer is happy with. I am looking at ways to lock this down so it can be used in a public exams. There are no iPads on the system at the moment but I have managed set up ASM and linked to Intune (store tokens and user sync). Since this is a 1-1 ipad, is it possible to kiosk the ipad with purely one app available? Is that something I can do with an intune ipad profile + configuration combo? Or do I need to look at some sort of software can can lock it down further? I do have a whitelist proxy available should it require certain URLs for authentication and logon but would block regular internet access. Not sure where to start on this one to be honest as im not experienced with iPads. Ideas?
edmokeski Posted Friday at 11:01 Posted Friday at 11:01 Easiest option is Guided Access mode, which locks it into one app unless you enter a PIN. Allows specified areas of the touchscreen to be turned off as well, to block out some interface elements. Can be defeated with a simple restart, though. If the calculator app doesn't have to phone home to work, you could also just take the device off the WiFi for the exam, if internet access is a particular concern. More complicated options are Single App Mode, which you can implement via MDM (have done in AirWatch and Jamf, but not Intune, but expect it's possible there too), or there's an assessment mode (https://support.apple.com/en-au/101976) but I think it requires app support. Last option I can think of is using Apple Classroom to lock it into the calculator app. Would also allow invigilator to monitor the device w/o standing over the student, so they can see if student tries to break out of it in some way (suspect restart would work here too). I did this for a visually impaired student a couple of years ago, first through GCSEs then through A-levels, and Guided Access w/ no WiFi and with a vigilant invigilator were deemed adequate safeguards. In our case it was just to show a PDF of the exam paper that would let her zoom for big type etc. YMMV depending on your environment and student population, however.
KK20 Posted Friday at 11:29 Author Posted Friday at 11:29 This student uses a cloverbook for magnification of text, but types answers. So ironically the paper will not be electronic for reading but will be electronic for writing (legibility). The ipad is an extra. Not sure on one-to-one invigilation. I will look at all those options above and see which ones intune can do easily.
