Shared iPad - iOS version 26.4 and above - 'resident/cache users' are not given enough storage space

We are having an issue with iPads which are configured as 'Shared iPads'. On affected iPads, each user only gets ~2GB (on a 64GB iPad), regardless of how many users we set as 'resident/cached users'.

  • This affects all models of iPad, 64GB and 128GB
  • Any generation of iPad (9th gen, 10th gen)
  • Using the same enrolment profile (I created a new one to test with)
  • We use Intune, but we also tried setting up a free tier version of Mosyle, and the issue is the same

The only difference is the iPadOS version. I've tested 26.3, 26.2, 26.0 and those are all fine, but 26.4, 26.4.1, 26.4.2 and 26.5 are all affected by this problem.

I can't see anyone else reporting the same issue, so I'm interested to see if it's a misconfiguration issue on our end.

I've attached a photo of two iPads on the same enrolment profile, with 2 cached users, the iPad on 26.0.1 is working fine (guest user gets 12GB) and the iPad on 26.5 is 'broken' (user only gets 2GB)

Been going on for years. AFAIK Intune still doesnt support the QuotaSize feature and there's no other way to set it. JAMF Does I think. Can't speak for Moysul.

Eventually at some point it'll try and download an update, fill itself up and not allow anyone to login at all and require a wipe/rebuild.

I just live with it and fix when it comes up. not ideal!

Yes, very annoying that Microsoft have not implemented the QuotaSize feature - I tried that with Mosyle and it worked, so it should work with Intune, if it was available.

I'm happy to bodge it for each iPad if I knew how to resolve! How do you fix it? I've not been able to workaround this problem, all iPads on the latest version of iPadOS are affected, but older iPadOS versions are fine. I've already tried to roll back iPadOS version but that is not possible without jailbreaking.

AFAIK there is no fix, they all get 2GB and that's it.

Shared iPads is a kinda niche education problem so not really high on the MS Intune roadmap I don't think.

I only operate in shared mode, guest only login. When it fills up (which seem to be at random, so there must be some sort of storage management going on) - I plug into Apple Configurator and wipe them. Not mega difficult as they pull their policies down quickly, just annoying!
