Anyone got one of those Sony eBook Readers?

Whats your verdict on it? is it any good?

 

Whats the pc connection software like? one review I saw said it was severely letting down the hardware.

 

What about PDF support? anyone tried a PDF technical manual?

 

From the reviews and I have seen I am getting the impression that I may wait for the next version.

I received mine yesterday. I love it! I can't believe how good the screen is - it really feels like reading a real book.

 

I didn't bother installing the Sony software. I have a Mac and the internal drive simply mounts on the desktop. eBooks can be dragged into the media folder and they are then available on the device.

 

I haven't bought any ebooks from the Waterstones store yet, although I believe all you need is Adobe Digital Editions installed since the UK ebooks use the new ePub format (at least that's what I think it's called).

 

So far I have been buying MS Reader .lit format ebooks and using a couple of utilities to strip out the DRM and convert to Sony's .lrf format. A wider range of books is available this way since we aren't allowed to buy directly from Sony's US store.

My wife wants one and I'm all for it - you should see how many bl@@dy books she takes with her when we go on holiday.

 

Hopefully the price will come down after xmas.

Has anyone else purchased one of these yet? I was having a fiddle around with the one on display in Waterstone's today and I must admit I'm impressed.

 

Apparently you get 100 classic books free on the CD in the box but the shop assistant couldn't tell me what they were. Does anyone have a link to the relevant info?

If somebody could confirm how well PDFs (e.g. service manuals with blown-apart diagrams) are rendered, it could turn in to a must have for support personnel. How often do you wish you had a manual in your hand when performing a task but you cannot justify printing out 100s of pages?

thats what i want to know. how are PDFs?
