plumyeti Posted February 26 Posted February 26 Hi all, Just wondering how other primary school approach pupil accounts and passwords. Currently only Pupils Year 1-6 have accounts created for them My predecesssor used to set password based on mymaths username+password which is 3 numbers 3 letters. However, it seems that mymaths now requires longer passwords. It also seems to be one very long winded manual process creating all the accounts as nothing seems to sync my process sems to take a long time getting a new pupil setup. Systems as follows. MIS MyMaths AD Office 365 Accelerated Reading Atom Learning Purple Mash TTRS Ed Shed Spelling Shed Busy things Tapestry Seesaw AM I missing something where we could be syncing all our accounts or am I missing the luxury from working in a senior school where everything was SSO.
TheHyperTechie Posted February 26 Posted February 26 Wonde + MyLogin Magic badges + SSO Dashboard. Pure bliss, couldn't be without it here.
dmj Posted February 26 Posted February 26 (edited) About 25 yrs ago (it's a long story), universities had the same issue and created the Shibboleth project. This was spearheaded by the educational IT sector and lead to SAML (now an industry standard) and was shortly followed by OAuth and OIDC and has been taken up by the rest of the IT inductry. Collectively these are known as Single Sign On. Most third party companies support one or more of these (they've had 25 yrs to get on board). This is what you need to do. Edit: If you want help setting up SSO, please ask. I've done this in large secondaries, at a uni with 20k users and in industry. Edited February 26 by dmj

I am fully aware of SSO and that is my end goal. at my previous secondary school if it did not support SSO we simply did not support it. It seems completely different here in the Primaries as 90% of the platforms do not support SSO.

Interested to here how you find it. I have heard good things. Do you use similar platforms and have them all linked in together?

Do you use similar platforms and have them all linked in together? We use Wonde heavily. Users get added to Bromcom, Wonde creates them accounts on the necessary apps, MyLogin then creates them a magic badge and they can log into to their chromebook + dashboard containing the educational apps. All of the apps recognise their credentials (SSO) so they don't need different credentials for each app.

As I recall, RM and Safeguarding Company did the same thing years ago, and we were only ever using one of their products at a time also.
DavR Posted February 26 Posted February 26 I've recently been going through all of our products here (also primary), trying to get as many on SSO as possible. Much as I would like to specify we only buy SSO-capable products, it's too late and I don't have the clout, sadly. What I have managed to get onto SSO for staff, based on their Microsoft account, include: Google account Adobe Creative Cloud Arbor MIS SchoolCloud Parents Evening Canva I wish I could have got more, but primary software does lack a lot of the enterprise features like SSO, it seems. As far as I can see, none of the student software we have supports SSO natively, so it would be one of the third party aggregators such as Wonde MyLogin or Classlink, that either does SSO internally or stores logins in a secure portal, for the kids. We're not using enough services at the moment to make it worthwhile buying that extra product, though.
Alis_Klar Posted May 1 Posted May 1 Every app needs to follow what Canva did and support thin provisioning fed from Google or Microsoft SSO. Autodesk TinkerCAD is also really good at this. MyLogin SSO works great for apps that pay Wonde to provision them from your MIS. MyLogin have a 2nd best option for apps that don't pay Wonde for provisioning called "saved password" where you have to download and match the usernames manually yourself and then remember to keep up to date with new children arriving. This also requires a Chrome Add-on to transparently inject the password. The apps supporting full SSO don't require the add-on. Just to be annoying the TT Rockstars iOS app does not support login via MyLogin but the website does. Mathletics only supports Microsoft psudo SSO as it asks for the username and password at first sign in and matches the records that way. J2E is great and supports every SSO method going PurpleMash is also very good as supporting SSO
