steveg Posted November 24, 2025 Posted November 24, 2025 Bit of a random request, but has anyone got an old CRT monitor or TV they would sell? Doesn't need to be working as my daughter wants to hollow it out to use as part of a costume, so needs to be a size you could fit your head inside, but not too big! Ideally located in East Sussex so I can collect as will be expensive to ship.
LeMarchand Posted November 25, 2025 Posted November 25, 2025 Managed to get rid of them from my schools and house a few years back. It might be worth a trip to your local recycling centre/dump. You might have to give them a bit of cash but I can't imagine they'd want much.

I did consider that, but being WEE waste I'd imagine they aren't allowed to sell them.

Good point, though if you don't get one it may be worth a try. I suspect that it would depend on who you ask on site. The other option, which might not be a sturdy or impressive but would likely be lighter and have fewer sharp edges, would be a "cardboard box" TV. There are plenty of tutorials online.
Fazza Posted November 25, 2025 Posted November 25, 2025 If you do manage to get one, please remember there can be between 10,000V - 25,000V in stored electrical charge on the CRT tube itself which can give you a very nasty shock! If it's been sat in a cupboard for years and not been powered on then the voltage will have dissipated but if it has recently been turned on then there there may still be some voltage stored on the neck of the tube. 1

When I was learning TV repair at college it always made me nervous when doing that! The CRT tube is normally coated with aquadag which I think should be earthed but it's been a good many years since I learnt all that!

The guy at my local tip walks around with a go-pro strapped to his chest so not sure he's one for bending the rules but worth a try. I agree making one would be better, especially as she intends to wear it for a full day at Comicon, but what do I know 🙂

Did it again more recently when I acquired a BBC master and Cub monitor, and that feeling never quite goes away! "CHISWICK? FRESH PANTS!" (wondering who gets that? ) 1
steveg Posted November 25, 2025 Author Posted November 25, 2025 Will be very careful with one if I do get one. Will be surprised if it will have been plugged in in the last few years, but will work on the assumption it has. 1
