A member server at school takes some while before I am presented with the logon screen.

 

The server stays on the 'Applying computer settings' for at least 2 hours before I am able to get to the login screen. And when I do manage to logon... I am presented with the 'applying computer settings' box again and it takes me a further 3-5 hours to get to the desktop.

 

When I am logged in (or not), I'm not able to connect to this server remotely. Let alone ping it from another location. After 22 hours have passed, I am then able to ping it and remote on to it.

 

Windows Firewall is turned off through GPO. I can't think of anything else to prevent it happening again. This problem has been going on for 2 weeks now.

 

Anyone care to help?

could be any number of things.

 

virus/spyware

network card/drivers

network settings

 

 

I'd suggest a reinstalling the os

Sounds like incorrect network settings to me, maybe duplicate IP but even then i shouldnt think it would take that long

 

have you tried another NIC in it? could be the network cards up the duff, have a look in event viewer and see what its trying to do

I would disconect from network restart it even if you have to pull the power out

( i had one like that once)

 

see if its any better not connected that rules out duplicate names/ ip

 

if its still bad then as long as data is backed up a reinstall would be best course of action

Have you checked the event logs and the available sizes on the root drive
