smartphone zoom between the optical ranges

Just so I understand.

 

Smartphones can have set zooms like x3 x10 which would be optical zooms, effectively using a different lens for each magnification.

 

So if you then pinch so say zoom in past x3 to say x5, does it switch to the x10 lens and crop?
