Small_Pig_Dancing Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Hi, Is a Celeron M 1.4GHz beefier than a P4 2GHz? Many thanks, SPD
Mr_M_Cox Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 IF by Beefier you mean faster then no. The celeron M is for notebooks and as a result needs to run cooler than desktop cpu's. This in turn mean less speed (in general that is, I am sure there are exception to the rule) The P4 from what you have written is a desktop 2Ghz compared to 1.6Ghz so will be better. hope that helps 1
Guest Guest Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Ah but which series Celeron? If its a new one then possibly it will be the faster as P4s are really really slow chips by todays standards. Either way neither CPU is worth using for anything more than web browsing or low resource services.
Mr_M_Cox Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Fair point I assumed that it was an old one but if it is a celeron2 then it will be better but really go for C2D or C2Q depending on what your after. If time is on your side wait to see what i7 will bring
Michael Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 It really depends on a lot of factors, not just the CPU. A Celeron M 1.4GHz would have a 400MHz bus and anywhere between 256K to 1MB L2 cache. The Pentium 4 2GHz would have a 400MHz bus and anywhere between 256K to 512K L2 cache. In practice would you notice much difference? Probably not, but I would say the Pentium 4 would have the edge, just. The Celeron would probably run cooler and quieter. Intel have a spec finder if you're interested here
tmcd35 Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Pretty much as Micheal indicates, it's more a question of bus speed and cache difference between the models being compared. Without know specifics the question is impossible to correctly answer. In general speaking a Celeron is a Pentium/Core processor with less cache memory. Thus at the same clock speed would be slower. Usually a P4 would be faster than a Celeron, but a newer Celeron may have equal or greater cache or faster bus speed than the P4 in question which could make the Celeron faster.
