Migrate data to cloud

Hi all,

 

If I could ask, what is the best way to migrate data from an on-premises server (Windows 2019) to sharepoint ?  We are a primary school.

yes you can do it with the share point migration tool:

its a while since I've used it but recall it was fairly simple, do a test first of course.

 

Another approach I've used is to mark a shared drive as read-only and get staff to migrate their own stuff

to teams / sharepoint. I created teams with a basic folder structure to keep it consistent. 

Main advantage is staff are forced to think about what they actually need, so in theory you get rid of a lot of "junk"

After a few months take the shared drive offline and see if anyone moans

I do it on the regular and it's not particularly difficult. The Sharepoint Migration Tool pretty much steps you through it. Take your time to make sure the usermapping CSV is accurate. Bear in mind that the tool does not do proper delta copies so make sure you know what has been modified if you don't do a full cutover. 

 

The only real gotcha I've found is making sure you get the right level of folder for OneDrive so you don't end up with your staff's stuff in documents\my documents.
