Viglen MPC

Hi All,

Just Picked up a couple of these little beasts...

I am trying to get them to network boot, however most of the software

I have tryed or looked at does'nt seem to support them .

 

In fact trying to get them to boot from cd or hard drive is a problem,

stuff like Wtware just hangs !!!.

 

Any suggestions as to where i may get an image to load via TFTP, would be

a great help, or just some info about the AMD GEODE cpu in this client

would be great.

It might be that it doesn't support network booting altogether? Can you get into the BIOS on this device?

 

It looks very nice I have to say and definitely fills a niche. It could be used in an internet cafe - but I think it's a little overpriced at £99. Something so small would probably be better off without the hard drive and in its place flash memory.

Hi Mike,

I bought a couple of these for test purposes, i got them with

an 80Gig drive and 512Mb Plus a vesa Mount for £124 Ex per unit.

 

Yes the Bios is accessible, and the unit does indeed network Boot.

The problem is none of the images i have been able to load into it

seem to support the Geode setup, they just hang during execution.

 

Currently I'm trying out the 2X thinclient setup ....

I am not sure to be honest. I would of thought asking Viglen themselves should point you in the right direction as to what works.

Tryed the Viglen route!!, still awaiting a sensible reply from them.

 

I asked them about Network Booting Issues, and they replied with a nice

Email about how to install Unbuntu .

 

So still awaiting the follow up response from them !!

I understand your pain in waiting for viglen to return your call,

 

Ive just spent the whole holidays removing classlink7 and VRMAS from our network and replacing it with a "homemade" solution.

 

We found Viglens attitude to customer support to be nothing less less than attrocious.

Anyone know what CPU this box uses, or how much memory it has...?

 

Viglen seen pretty shy about giving any hardware details on their website..

Here's a link to the original maker's of this unit, the one show is the

A603 viglen currently sell the A503!!

The (A603) supposedly have the AMD geode GX cpu inside, BUT cpuidz shows our units here (A503) to be fitted with a National Semiconductor Processor running at 400Mhz (possibly a Clone / Licensed Copy), or just what was fitted to the earlier production units..???

 

Normal off the shelf unit has 256Mb memory and 40Gb drive preloaded

with xubuntu, not super fast!!! tried loading XP for (FUN) onto unit....

 

the word Ssssllooooowwwww comes to mind...

 

But it seems an ideal candidate for PXE Booting ??

 

If only i can get an image for it.

I've just installed Windows XP on my new Viglen MPC-L. Anyone know where I can get the Graphics and Audio drivers from?
