Just noticed that 4Matrix have changed the VA calculation they use - I assume this is based on a change by the DfE but can't find any documentation and 4Matrix can't help until tomorrow. Which is fine except we have had one of those midday phone calls so I really need my ducks in a row tomorrow. The good news is that just about all of our vulnerable groups are now showing a positive VA based on their predictions. The bad news is that a couple of those were showing as negative before Xmas and I really need to feel confident that I know the new figures are correct before we put them in front of anyone. Can anyone help? Trying to Google but not finding anything so far..............

MattMitchell Posted January 12, 2015 Author Posted January 12, 2015 It's calculated more like progress 8, in terms of the "predict a value from the prior attainment" formula. The ready-reckoner they produced only calculates from Average Points, rather than factoring in the difference for English and Maths. It's unlikely to be substantially different in its key nature though. You should be able to download the VA pupil data from one of the RAISE online reports, so you can get precise details of which pupil has what value-added. To be honest, it's good to have the info handy and together, but I've been inspected six times in as many years and have yet to meet an inspector who would want to delve that far into the maths of it all! The main thing you could look to get from it, is whether you can identify specific students who had a disproportionate impact because of external factors. Depends on what the inspection team are like though. Good luck!
