As with so many things, it's my first time of doing it and no-one else in the school knows how it's done or how it's been done before. The KS4 seems relatively straightfoward as it corresponds with the PI reports in SIMS. Plus it's pretty obvious who to include and who to exclude. KS5 however, is giving me a major headache. It seems to bear no relation to the PI report in SIMS (the "Detailed" version appears only to include exams taken in the current season while the "Full" version includes everything, including their GCSEs from KS4 - neither of these match the list that the DoE use which is of all post-16 exams). Even working out which students to include is not straightforward. I have read and re-read the guidance and can't work out whether we should include students who are only taking AS levels or not. Help! Are there any top tips on getting this done and ensuring that the data is corrrect please?
NormalDistribution Posted October 2, 2013 Author Posted October 2, 2013 You should only include students who are at the end of their studies. Unless they have got to a point where they will be too old to include next year and you feel that claiming them this year would be beneficial. When you claim a student, it automatically includes all their qualifications completed in the last two years, so therefore you are counting AS levels for last year. But probably not ones completed this year as presumably these students are continuing or withdrawing from thei studies. The guidance on the documents page of the checking tables website is thorough and you should read that.

david_craggs Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 so... look for your typical Y13s.. ie: done AS and then moved onto A2 - these count... both their A2 and AS grades - the A2 grades over ride the AS results... but you can get a student who has picked up an AS in Y13 for example.. Then look for your Y14 students who has done GCSE in Y12, then picked up AS in Y13 and then moved onto Y14 to continue their A2s.. these count!. If you have a student who has joined for 1 year and is completing AS's currently and will be moving onto A2s make them a Y12 on the Data Checking website - but they will count next year!. Remember that only grades obtained in the last 2 years count though... so if by chance you have a student who has grades from 3 yrs ago (AS/A2) - then these won't count... and when they are aged 19 they don't count either... All ok? Hope that helps..

GNewnham Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 You can also add other exam results which may not appear in the list for a pupil eg ABRSM, Rockschool guitar etc. You do need to have the certificates to back up your claim but they can all add to the total UMS score for a pupil. I think it is about 70 ums for grade 8 instrument. Just finished all mine yesterday! Hope this helps.

ICTLady Posted October 4, 2013 Posted October 4, 2013 Thanks all - what's proving difficult is getting a report out of SIMS that measures the same results that appear on the tables, for easy comparison. it seems like the only way to know whether your results are correct is to go through each student individually. How much checking do you actually do? List of students, obviously, but do you have reports set up to match the other measures so you can check your figures match theirs? Thanks for the guidance on who to include. I've spent many happy hours this week speaking to the Helpline. I did my best with the guidance, but there are 11 separate documents for KS4 and almost as many for KS5 - a lot to take on when you're completely new and no-one else in the schools knows how it works I'm going to check with the head of music in case we have any AB exams or similar we can include, thanks for that tip!
david_craggs Posted October 5, 2013 Posted October 5, 2013 We check every grade for every student... found 5 GCSE grades that they didn't record and 3 A-Level A2's... makes a difference.
ICTLady Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 How long does that take you, David? And do you do it alone, or with someone else? It seems like a huge job, but hopefully easier next year when I'm not doing it for the first time.
NormalDistribution Posted October 9, 2013 Author Posted October 9, 2013 The way I do it is to compare the total APS I have for each student to what they have, if it is the same then I assume it is because all the grades are the same, where it differs (particularly for where I have more than them) I cross check all the grades and send them the evidence for what they are missing.
