jcollings Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 We replaced some of our switches with some new 3Com 48 port managed switches and now the rooms run like a dog!! The switches all go back to our HP 5400 zl which was working fine with our old netgear kit. They all go back on fibre running at 1Gb. Does anyone have any ideas as to why the new switches should be so slow?
Michael Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 If the switches are managed they should be able to tell you where the problem is. If they're not, ensure that all ports are set to Auto-detect and not forced. As a general rule (in my experience) using the same brand of networking equipment from start to finish makes all the difference 1

They worked ok with netgear one end and HP the other. Turn on 30 PC's and most of them don't even get DHCP address. Very odd and worrying!
Michael Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 It is a little strange, your workstations won't do much without an IP What happens if you allocate a static IP on a workstation? Can you browse the web and network drives for example? If all else fails, you could try forcing the switches back to factory default. It is generally recommended whenever installing a new switch. I am also presuming that your DHCP server is working ok? I would double check
FN-GM Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 Can you ping the switch concerned from your DHCP server?

You could try setting the client ports as edge ports to see if that helps them get an ip address.
Hightower Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 If it's new I would try to get it swapped out. I hate messing with switches and would only do it as a last measure.
jcollings Posted August 20, 2008 Author Posted August 20, 2008 Thanks to all those who replied. It was indeed STP being enabled on all ports out of the box. Turned that off and all was well again.
