Scan099 Posted January 10, 2025 Posted January 10, 2025 Hi All Does anyone here lease the IT devices from Dell, Lenovo? Mainly looking at leasing Student Desktops to start? if anyone has any contact details please?
mikes Posted January 10, 2025 Posted January 10, 2025 We have just started leasing Lenovo desktops from a local firm here in Wales based in Cardiff. I didn't get involved in the finances/contracts or anything like that, I am just the guy at the bottom who sets them up. Can PM you their contact details if you want?

PotNoodleTech Posted January 10, 2025 Posted January 10, 2025 Just bare in mind that you are going to be effectively paying 25% to 50% more for your fleet if you are leasing them so I don't realy see the point. It's like PCP cars - it "seems" cheaper you've got a £50k merc on the drive for only £500 a month but ultimatly all you get is no car that you don't own and you still wasted £500 a month over the last 3 years plus deposit etc. Doesnt make sense to me when ed tech PCs are very good value.

flyinghaggis Posted January 10, 2025 Posted January 10, 2025 (edited) From what I see, I need to spend £600-£800 on a new PC for a £150 trade in or buy quality refurbished for £200-£300 each that will do the job and last just as long. I don't see the benefit ? That's what I've always thought but speaking to finance they appear increasingly keen on leasing options even though it seems to cost more over the lifespan of the kit? I can only assume that there's somekind of financial wizardry (Capex vs opex, tax breaks, etc) they can do to offset the additional expense which makes the lease the preferred option? mikes Posted January 10, 2025 Posted January 10, 2025 Yeah I'll PM you the details of who we used, I don't understand the financials of it myself all of that is way above me.
Scan099 Posted January 10, 2025 Author Posted January 10, 2025 I think it comes down to the outlay all at once for purchasing kit, with leasing you can spread those payments. But as others have said you never own it when leasing
mikes Posted January 10, 2025 Posted January 10, 2025 yeah I dunno I am happy to lease desktops because they tend to stay in decent condition - we leased the larger sized ones for the specs. I'd never want to lease out laptops with all the wear caused by heavy use. We always bought outright in the past but this year we have leased the 2 classrooms worth. I wonder if other costs have taken over e.g. in 2010 when we bought outright, we never had any Chromebooks as a spend outlay. I'm only an ICT Tech so my importance here is hardly any!
PotNoodleTech Posted January 10, 2025 Posted January 10, 2025 Thinking about it there is one benefit to leasing and that is if your SLT are not committed to funding ICT properly, leasing things guaruntees investment in ICT as you HAVE to pay those lease payments legally so it's not something SLT can just suddently claw the money back with no notice, or cancel it - your in that lease for 5 years and you've got the equipment up front. Sadly that poor attitude to IT funding is all to prevailant in Wales so I can understand why finance would want to lock equipment purchasing into a lease which is guarunteed to be paid year on year (thatis unless your Headteacher likes being in court).
synaesthesia Posted January 10, 2025 Posted January 10, 2025 Just be very careful with some of the leases - whilst we didn't lease PC hardware (signing in systems, phone systems) our lease agreement meant we paid more over 1 year than outright ownership - and they were 3/5 years leases. Even if you're not involved in the purchasing/finance side of it, make sure you see the paperwork. When a £300 ends up costing you £1500 in it's lifetime, even with all the worst things that can happen going wrong, you're so out of pocket it's unreal. And yes, our previous business manager signed off on what we had thinking it was a great deal. 2
