Papercut Follow you print not appearing in destination

Hi,

I am completely defeated at the moment with paper cut. I have recently updated the papercut server on Friday and went home where everything was working fine and happily and today I have come to the office to find out that the Follow you option when you go to print a document has completely disappeared! (Which is very typical for the first day back with teachers wanting to print out lesson plans)

I have checked all the settings in papercut to make sure that something just wasn't ticked but everything is setup perfectly to work. the browser extension is also setup perfectly fine but still no joy. I have tried to google the answer but it is just a unique issue I cannot really get a helpguide to run me through the problem I am having which is so bizarre. Are there any papercut experts that could help me out?

If the Follow You option is not there when you go to print, that sounds like a Windows/OS/Server issue, not a Papercut issue. Can you install the printer manually? Can you see the printer if you navigate to the server?

Hi @TechMonkey I have navigated to the server and I can confirm that it is all there and setup. for some reason it is set to be available from 04:00 - 04:01 but I have set this to be available to always but still no joy.

I would suggest you reboot the server with the print queue on, I assume that is the same server as papercut is installed on.

Give it a reboot, log out of the PC and back into the PC and see if the follow me printer re-apears.

Hi The printer is there and on Windows you can add it. The issue is mainly to do with Chrome and printing from there. The follow you mobility print has completely disappeared after updating and going onto the mobility print application on the server also confirms that there is no more follow you print and only the printers are there.

Hi, I have the new mobility print all setup and migrated and all chrome devices are version 114+. The main problem I have managed to see is in the actual windows server on the mobility print software that is supposed to have it. I used to have this enabled and this was there and everyone could print using the follow me print on chrome but for some odd reason when I updated the papercut software for the server to 24.1.2 it is now no longer there and it is not enabled. For a temporary fix I have had to enable all the printers on the mobility print to be discoverable so that they can print from chrome on the chromebooks but it is not the most ideal solution for everyone.

*UPDATE* I have had a look deeper into the server and checked pretty much everything. I reinstalled the mobility print and checked the settings in paper cut and it has reappeared again. It was a very strange little bug that still to this very moment I am unsure what has caused it.

Hi @Danny11717,

An upgrade of the PaperCut application service has no impact of the version of Mobility Print. The two services are independent. Did the operating system also receive an update?

Mobility Print runs a utility to determine what paper sizes the driver, and thus any printer using that driver, will support.

We then make a nnnnn.printer.toml file located in c:\Program Files (x86)\PaperCut Mobility Print\data\spool\printercapabilities

If for some reason we cannot generate a printer.toml file, the printer cannot be published by Mobility Print.

Have you added a test version of the virtual queue using that same driver? If you see that appear within 5 minutes, we run the tool every 5 minutes, it is possible the printer registry is corrupted in Windows. I have spent too many hours attempting to track down Windows registry corruption, no PaperCut required. If this is the case, it is time to rebuild the queue and remove the corrupt entry.

The printers' Availability time of 4am is a setting PaperCut configures to prevent Windows from scheduling jobs to the Windows nul port used for this queue.

Thanks

Hi @alanmorris thanks for this. I have uninstalled it and reinstalled the software back onto the software to clear the issue and made sure that the follow you print was then discoverable again and this has worked. This could have been a combination of things before the christmas break. I did update the windows server before I left for the break and when I came back I also updated papercut when I came back to the office so it could have been multiple of things that could have suddenly caused it to stop working.

Thankfully the panic is over and everything is working as it should again and I will keep this in mind about the 4am scheduling.

Did you mean the follow you print queue? could you print using that queue direct from the print server? Anyway glad it is sorted.

We've had problems with the Chrome print dialog but there is a system dialog option that sometimes sorts things out.

We also had problems printing from Chrome because I disabled printing on the G-suite to stop kids messing but didn't realise it affected people signed in in Windows too so they couldn't print from Chrome either - oops

It was the follow you print that disappeared but all of the other printers in the mobility print were discoverable and could be enabled. It was very weird especially on the first day back in the office. These things happen and that is why we are paid to fix it I guess lol.
