Latest Government Announcement - wider impact ??

So the new government have made a huge announcement:

 

The government will legislate to allow councils to open schools again, end the automatic academisation of failing maintained settings and make academies follow reformed national teacher pay scales and conditions.

 

Just wondered if this would impact on schools making secisions on major changes - ie MIS systems that are critical now that there are added pressures looming within the sector.

 

Thoughts anyone ??

Sweeping academies reform proposed in children's bill

I can't imagine it'll have too much impact round here. Our local councils couldn't be trusted with schools prior to academisation and certainly can't be counted on for anything except for christmas light switch ons. Any reform would have to come from the very top down to be even considered workable.

Wasn't it the Labour government that introduced academies to take on failing schools from the local councils...?

 

An awful lot of councils seemed to be posting large budget deficiencies or notices of bankruptcy, so I can't imagine any of them wanting to take on another money pit like a school.

 

The part about making academies follow reformed national teacher pay scales and conditions, sounds like the inference is that they're not... Are they currently paying more or less? Sounds like you think they are paying less and will have to find extra money to pay the national teacher pay scale wages?

I don't think so, academies were introduced by Cameron and this is the first non-conservative government since then.

It was under Labour in 2000, under the Learning and Skills Act 2000 that academies were first introduced, called City Academies back then before changing to just Academies. Then you had the sponsored Academies with specialisms, then the Conservatives in 2010 introduced the Academies Act 2010 to get more schools to convert.

I stand corrected, I hadn't even heard of academies until after Cameron starting pushing it. The more you know.

On top of this Councils may also change due to the devolution white paper released on Monday.

Love em' or hate em' I'm glad the era of pushing schools to become academies, and even forced academisation, is over. I know a few schools nearby who felt immense pressure to join up, even though they were operating fine under the LA.

 

From a more selfish point, I do count myself lucky that my school continues to value a dedicated tech 5 days a week. I was always worried about the possibility of the school being swallowed up by a MAT, and my role being transitioned into a MAT IT Team. I know there are great teams out there who do a fantastic job with their resources, but you never get the same level of support with a central team vs a dedicated tech (even if only on-site for a couple of days a week).
