timbo343 Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 I think this has been raised before but wondering if anyone has had any luck or if they have deemed it as a classroom management issue. We have Impero and we have added youtube.com to the impero block list and sure enough, youtube.com is blocked on the devices that the teacher has set to block impero on. However, students are opening up Google Slides and inserting a Youtube embedded video and playing the video that way. Has anyone got a way of disabling this? For now on the Smoothall i've created a new custom category, added the regex of youtubeeducation\.com\/embed.*docs\.google\.com into the URL Patterns, created a new policy in guardian and set this custom catergory to be blocked for students. This blocks any embedded youtubeeducation videos from being played in Slides. So, has anyone got a better way of doing this?
msi_school Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 There was a GPO setting to prevent users inserting online video but I cant find it now
timbo343 Posted December 10, 2024 Author Posted December 10, 2024 There was a GPO setting to prevent users inserting online video but I cant find it now I vaguely remember setting that in the past and then having to undo it because they wanted to import videos into documents. Thing is, does the same restriction apply to Google Slides that are being used on a Chromebook?
msi_school Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 Sorry I did not read your original message correctly I was thinking about PowerPoint.
36Degrees Posted February 5, 2025 Posted February 5, 2025 I added the regex of youtubeeducation\.com\/embed.*docs\.google\.com into the URL Patterns, created a new policy in guardian and set this custom catergory to be blocked for students. This blocks any embedded youtubeeducation videos from being played in Slides. This has just started to be an issue for us. Can you describe how you did this in Smoothwall please as I'm struggling...
Neil83 Posted February 5, 2025 Posted February 5, 2025 Can you block *.googlevideo.com? This should stop the videos from playing. i.ytimg.com should also block any thumbnail images.
36Degrees Posted February 5, 2025 Posted February 5, 2025 Thanks I'll give that a go but just wondered how you add that URL pattern as I keep getting "Validation failed because "youtubeeducation\.com\/embed.*docs\.google\.com" is not a valid url or domain."
timbo343 Posted February 5, 2025 Author Posted February 5, 2025 (edited) Thanks I'll give that a go but just wondered how you add that URL pattern as I keep getting "Validation failed because "youtubeeducation\.com\/embed.*docs\.google\.com" is not a valid url or domain." here you go: We saw some students trying to import youtube videos into slides the other day and it never worked so the kods just gave up - win! What the URL pattern does is it captures any URL string that starts with youtubeeducation.com/embed and finishes with docs.google.com Edited February 5, 2025 by timbo343 1
36Degrees Posted February 6, 2025 Posted February 6, 2025 That's great thanks - never occurred to me to click on the advanced button...
