As a life long Trekkie, this just doesn't interest me at all. I grew up on TNG, really enjoying strange new worlds and lower decks. Discovery... i struggled through, it got better, but still just didn't quite vibe with me, the finale.. meh

 

Oh well, each to there own, i can always go back and watch the 700+ episodes of pre Disco content.

Agreed. Why they tag on Star Trek to something that is nothing to do with the lore is rubbish... just make something original. But I'm a basement dweller.

I thought Discovery had real fantastic ideas on the plots.. then it just drags on.. keep the audience guessing.. then the conclusion!!!!.. oh.. that is it....

Klingon War - this is the one plot I wanted. How did it start? How well did Starfleet do? Considering how Klingons seemed a bit cautious to go to war with the Federation, they must have put up a fight. And..... well............. that was the conclusion....

All concluded so poorly... like they spent ages coming up with the ideas but didn't know how to create the stories or the conclusion. One thing I always loved about Star Trek, the attention to detail on the story. Like they knew to avoid another cancellation (TOS) they had to work hard for the fans and stories. TNG/DS9 even VOY all started a bit touchy.. but they worked hard to make the improvements. You always get the episode fillers (less budget/basic idea).. but they had 20+ episodes a season.

 

I'm enjoying Strange New Worlds because it feels more like Star Trek... but some of it could be better.

 

Section 31 looks far too noisy and glamorous.. compared to what we had previously. S31 to me is more like surgery with precision slicing to be quiet and perfect. Sloan was such a perfect character played by Sadler. Quietly turning up. Precise.

I generally enjoyed Discovery. It wore its heart on its sleeve a bit too much, but kept me hooked.

Section 31 were first introduced in DS9. It makes sense to me that not everyone would play by the rules in a Marxist utopia, so people who would also not play by the rules would be needed to combat threats.

I do agree with this to some extent. Not sure why this is a thing in SF shows as the conclusions rarely live up to the build up, or they try to gloss over things so quickly that the audience doesn't have time to work out it makes no sense. Doctor Who, I'm looking at you!

I've got to say.... what an awful film! Don't normally comment, but just felt I had to...

 

Probably the first 'Trek' film (however loosely affiliated) I've seriously considered not watching all the way through... I stopped it to make a coffee half way through and pondered whether I should go and do something more interesting... like watch my old hard drive defrag...

 

I've always thought that 'The Emperor' was more a pantomime villain, but she was almost OK as side character/protagonist at some points in Discovery so I suspended my disbelief. However, being the main character here was too much, there were points I expected her to do an overly exaggerated super evil villain laugh... just had that feel to it (I know it's Star Trek, so it's not going to be raw and edgy). The story line was tired and I guess in a short film (for these days) didn't have time for all individual characters to be fully explored (considering 99% of them were new 'Trek' characters), but I'm not sure how it could have been fluffed and padded without plodding, so agree with the above, a few things didn't make sense in the big build up for an hour and a half leading to an ultimately short and disappointing 30 second conclusion... with a poor 'comedy' end clip, unfortunately leaving it open for a sequel.

 

Most of it felt a lot like a poor man's Guardians rip off.

I agree, really struggled to make it all the way through. The pacing and editing was all over the place.

 

It makes Star Trek V look like a masterpiece.

I'm not sure they went the best way about introducing it, I know it has been done before by the BIG guys at Marvel, DC, etc. You know a few years back there was a thirst for those kind of films, didn't really matter who the lead was (hell, they even got away with Ant-Man...just).

 

But the general public seems to be over it, so to go all out for a film on character(s) very few will know about, seems to me like a thing you'd only do to attract Trek fans and this was not something that was going to play well with hardcore Trek fans... strange tactic.

 

Initially my OH told me about it as she watches some stuff on Paramount+ and I thought, actually I might be interested in a new 'spin-off' Trek series, then I found out it was actually a film...
