Hi Everyone, this is a rant and a request for advice. I get a ticket from DT saying they want to use the Baileigh plasma cutter, that has not been used since Covid. Ok, we don't have the software though, called BobCad Cam. IT must have it.

ME: Cannot locate it anywhere on the network. Who installed it, what details do we have?

DT: Dunno, maybe these guys. Names a company.

ME:Calls these guys who don't have the software anymore, pass me onto another company, who have for £500. I tell DT and there's a sucking of teeth and don't want to pay. Fair do's

1 week later

DT: Oh, look what we've found...the CD's.

ME: Installs the software and opens it.....it requires a dongle to open the software. 'Where's the dongle?

DT: Dunno, it ight be in the machine.

ME: Nope, are you sure you don't know where it is?

DT: Erm, I think a member of IT came down and took it.

ME: Who and why, the cutter won't work without it and I'm sure they would know that.

DT: Not sure. You can find it.

To make things even better, the company Ucannest send you to Ali-Express to purchase it.

I'm thinking of taking the drivers from the CD and using FreeCAD. What do you think? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Harry

Thank you for listening, I'm getting battered going back and forth with the blasé lack of information

If it was me and the DT department can't be arsed to look after their software they can pay for a replacement, IT will keep it going forward. In the meantime I'd get on with other things.

I don't remember seeing a physical install media for years but in the days of CDs I had a very strict policy of never taking custody of software, I would either take a copy or do the install from a PC in the department in question and had the CD back.

I used a lying persons accusation of my losing an expensive pieces of software as the reason for me not to hold on to any disks.

Thanks guys, I've only been here a year and finding out all sorts of many differing answers. I'll see how FreeCAD goes.
