I've only recently started to deploy software via GPOs, so forgive me if these are silly questions.

Do I remove the package from the GPO once all of the machines have received and installed the software?

If I leave it in the GPO will it repeat the install each time the machine is switched on?

No and no.

Take a look at this document it's really good, it includes a trouble shooting section as well as deployment instructions.

Thanks cookie_monster, I have been looking for something like this. I remember doing .msi files on my Win2K Administrator course many moons ago, but haven't done them since.

Just one more question, how does the GPO know that it doesn't have to install again?

Each GPO has a revision number which is incremented on the server each time you make a change. The computer keeps a copy of the last revision number that it has applied to the computer. If it has successfully installed the software and applied the preferences then the computer will update its revision number to the current one otherwise it will stay the same as it was and continue to try and apply the policy until it is successful.

Thanks guys, I think there may be a problem with one or two of my machines. Now checking the event logs this morning. I hadn't realised there was so much to it:(

Try installing the software manually to see if that fixes it.

Did that and got an error:

Module C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9d.ocx failed to register HRESULT -2147220473

I've now checked all of the suite computers where this was supposed to be installed and I have four machines with the same error message. Er what do I do now?

I hate that error, usually it turns out to be older macromedia software installing and requireing conflicting versions of the various ocx libraries. You could try registering the file manually by typing

regsrv32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9d.ocx

Also try running a repair install on older macromedia products as this can help also.

regsrv32 is not recognised as an internal or external command

Probably me doing it in the wrong place:(

Will try repair then uninstalling. Thanks anyway.

Whoops, sorry not your fault it was my abysmal typing. It is supposed to be:

regsvr32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9d.ocx

just in a command window

After typing the code three times to get it right (!!) the module is now registered. Just whipped round the four machines all success.

One more thing - one of the machines had Flash9f.ocx which I assume is a newer module. I have copied the Flash9d.ocx file to that machine and registered it. Is this OK or will I have messed up?

Many thanks for all the help. My last day at work today - hols here I come:):)

It may be an idea to reinstall flash on that machine or run the re-registration on the 9f.ocx file to make sure that all the bits of the installed version are registered correctly.

Thanks, good idea as I'm not sure what installed the 9f module.
