Ditto Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 My charity has stumbled across an old Data Cartridge - yes, just the one! It's an HP02 Ultrium Data Cartridge 400B. Our preferred e-waste company claim they can't shred. Our MSP has reached out to third party and have come back with a quote of £300, of which half is for collection! Anyone else had to deal with this challenge and achieved a less eye-watering price. We will need a data destruction cert. Related - anyone used iwaste.co.uk
JRA Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 (edited) On a marginally more serious note, can you do it in-house? Would they accept that? Edited October 17, 2024 by JRA
Ditto Posted October 17, 2024 Author Posted October 17, 2024 On a marginally more serious note, can you do it in-house? Would they accept that? Wouldn't meet our green ethics :pI've read a lot of bizarre alternatives and my favourite is when someone put the cartridge liquid nitrogen before dropping then dropped it from stories high on to a concrete floor and watched it shatter in to a million pieces. I can't verify that and would not bother with a fact check, but I liked the image! But seriously, we have no internal means of disposal and for policy reasons we need a certificate of destruction from a trusted supplier. It's highly likely there is sensitive special category data on the tape, so we do need to take the appropriate action for very good reasons.
MatthewL Posted October 18, 2024 Posted October 18, 2024 If you have a company such as Shredit, they will take them and they even shred hard drives. Sure any other similar company would do the same, we had a box full done a few years ago.
enjay Posted October 18, 2024 Posted October 18, 2024 When I needed to destroy one of those, the Science Department provided a strong magnet. When you say your e-waste company doesn't shred, you are just talking about the data cartridge not all HDD/SSDs, right?
Andrew_C Posted October 18, 2024 Posted October 18, 2024 Can you elaborate on "data cartridge"? Are we talking tape or platters? Platters - drill through them, case and all Tape - band saw/cut into shreds
PotNoodleTech Posted October 18, 2024 Posted October 18, 2024 When I needed to destroy one of those, the Science Department provided a strong magnet. When you say your e-waste company doesn't shred, you are just talking about the data cartridge not all HDD/SSDs, right? Sounds like they're just making excuses - find a better company - those big industrial shredders can shred literally anything - chuck a sledge hammer in there and bye bye sledge hammer.
msi_school Posted October 18, 2024 Posted October 18, 2024 It is possible that fiscal responsibility and data destruction concerns could lead you into to a no win situation. I think the concern with a tape is that it tangles up in the shredder or saw, but there must be a company who do this for LTO tapes and thus have a process, alternatively you could sit there with some scissors and cut it into short lengths then send these of to a shredding company.
