Really stupid server 2003 problem

Ok, i'm feeling really dumb now, i've just installed server 2003 onto a PC and setup the auto updates, but my NIC won't start, it just says that the device failed to start, have I missed something, I know the NIC works as it worrked fine in XP.

 

Can someone please help....

Yes it does indeed sound like drivers. Although XP and 2003 are very similar, they can and do use different sets of drivers altogether.

 

In saying that though, did you install Windows Server 2003 and your network adapter appeared automatically? If that's the case, the driver might not be the issue. If you have a look in Device Manager, does your network adapter have a question mark or exclamation mark over it?

It's appeared ok, but with an exclamation mark, Via Rhine II, I think, usually works but for some reason it hasn't this time.

If there's an exclamation mark and the network adapter has appeared ok, this means the driver is ok, but there's a conflict of resources somewhere. Once this has been resolved, the driver will be correctly loaded and function as normal.

 

I would check within the BIOS that Windows Server 2003 is set to control system resources.

Worth just deleting the device and then doing a re-scan; far too often I've found that this fixes "yellow exclamation marks"

 

Resource conflicts can occur but I don't think I've seen one for a good many years - I think ACPI motherboards are just much better at handling this (and that is what they're supposed to do!)

It's in Device manager, but with a yellow exclamation mark.

 

I've deleted the device and re-scanned but the same thing happens.

 

 

This is a fresh install, I'm sure i've had this problem once before, I just can't remember how I sorted it (that'll teach me for not writing it down), I think it had something to do with the updates after the completion of setup, Windows blocks all incoming traffic until you setup automatic updates, I did set them up but it's not allowing any incoming traffic.

 

I'm going to try a different NIC in the server and see what happens, I have a boxed D-link adaptor with driver CD that could be useful.

And now it's time to beat me with a big stick......... the D-link has worked fine with the drivers installed from the CD.

 

Damn those on-board LAN adaptors, VIA Rhine II, don't suppose anyone knows where server 2003 drivers can be found for those??

How did you fix it give people some feedback back was you getting a Error 10

 

Also m8 Rhine II I am assumming that it was a dlink network card

I installed a D-link card into the server and installed the drivers for that. It worked, then I found drivers for the Via Rhine II Nic from the Via website and installed them. Jobs a good un, everything went in ok.

 

The error I got was "device could not start"
