Intune - About to throw ipad out the window

Dipping toes into Intune after year of using the free Meraki

I've managed to get a bunch of Ipads all setup with user affinity, apps deployed to them, all good and working.

We have one user however who would like to make use of the guest account feature, so I created a new enrollment profile with the following settings:-

This seemed to work fine and the iPad configured correctly, asked for an apple id to login and we are also able to using the guest account without any issue.

The only problem is that none of the deployed apps will install to this device. For example I have the Office 365 app as an iOS VPP app in Intune assigned to my all uses group and some other apps assigned to say, just teaching staff, which the user of the device is, and another app assigned to all devices. All the licenses for the apps are of the device type. None will install. I have even tried creating a new group and adding that device and the user to it and assigning the apps to that group but still nothing.

If I checked the managed apps under the device in Intune, all the assigned apps are there with their status as Resolved intent - "Required install" Installation status - "Waiting for install status" - Interestingly if I go to teh application and click on device install status, the device I'm trying to assign it to is not listed.

I have tried pressing the sync button the the device overview page but nothing happens although the device seems to be contactable as the last check-in time stays update to date.

if anyone can offer anything to this id be most grateful!

Few things i've come across that can cause this issue.

 

what version of iOS are you running on the iPad, I believe there is a limit of around iOS 15.5 if it is lower than this it won't deploy the apps.

 

Force sync may also help.

 

Also instead of shared iPad mode, I would recommend "guest mode". Shared mode will split the remaining storage space between both you cached users where as guest will have the full thing. Guest mode will also reset the profile after logging out. All apps logged out etc. Makes it great for students and shared teachers.

 

Try the force sync on a different wifi with different network (Firewall)

I eventually got it to work, more luck than skill I think but I setup a new group solely for that iPad and added the device and the user to that group, then deployed the apps to that new group and they installed!

 

Yeah I am using the guest account mode. The device is for one user but occasionally they want a student to use some literacy apps so the guest account seemed the way forward.

Weird things happen with Company portal. There's one that is automatically deployed when intune enrolled, that will conflict if you try and deploy it via appstore. But it also needs the store version to be available to able to update otherwise it goes out of date and won't update any apps. (ask me how I know!)

I spent so long playing whack a mole with it I can't categorically tell you what settings I used in the end - but if company portal doesn't show up, or you get nagged for apple ID after logging in then take a look at how CP is deployed and tinker with it.

Throw intune out the window as that's whats garbage.
