WTF! The police spend far too long on the phone trying to explain that its not an emergency and suggesting alternative phone numbers. They should take a harder line once its clear its not an emergency they should quickly tell them and hang up, if they phone back go and have them arrested or issue a fine.

Although some of the comments are ridiculous, (unbelievable in fact) I do agree a tougher line should be taken. These kind of people should be fined to discourage their stupid behaviour.

IIRC they cannot hang up on a caller, the only course of action is to persuade them that it doesn't warrant a genuine response and that they should hang up now to free the line.

They can hang up, if it call is obviously a hoax or the like. But hanging up is not allowed if there is any doubt from what I've been told (and that site confirms that too).
