PretzelLogic Posted June 27, 2024 Posted June 27, 2024 My SLT have just decided that they all require school mobile phones... They have signed up for unlimited data, but when in school should they be using wifi so we can filter their traffic through our firewall?
speakercon Posted June 27, 2024 Posted June 27, 2024 Did they involve you prior to purchasing? We have some staff mobiles (android) and we manage them through Intune and force a specific SSID to connect which has the relevant filtering policy applied to it.
MartinT Posted June 27, 2024 Posted June 27, 2024 Our staff generally use BYOD wi-fi because the mobile signal in-school is pretty poor. That means they're filtered anyway!
pete Posted June 27, 2024 Posted June 27, 2024 If they're in a MDM (I'm guessing they're not, from the "they have signed up for" rather than "we got them X with plan Y"), you should have options for content filtering there. DfE guidance says they should be filtered / monitored on-device regardless of where they are: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/meeting-digital-and-technology-standards-in-schools-and-colleges/filtering-and-monitoring-standards-for-schools-and-colleges So I'd flag it up with the safeguarding lead to at least risk assess it / sign off the risk.
PretzelLogic Posted June 27, 2024 Author Posted June 27, 2024 Thanks for the info. I'll tell them they have to use wifi onsite, and will add them to the MDM.
fiza Posted June 27, 2024 Posted June 27, 2024 Thanks for the info. I'll tell them they have to use wifi onsite, and will add them to the MDM. What about offsite when they are using 4G/5G? Should that be filtered too as it is a 'work' device?

Yes, make sure they are connected to the Wi-Fi then they will be forced to go through the firewall and or web filter system. Also as said previous, definitely add them to the MDM for managed control.
thebatman Posted June 28, 2024 Posted June 28, 2024 I dont know about this, but don't @schoolBrodband and @LGfL do data SIMS that are filtered via there filtering system?
robintech Posted June 28, 2024 Posted June 28, 2024 Not done it myself yet but a proxy should work with Android and iOS for mobile and Wi-Fi ? , I think iOS don't allow interception of App Data though only web browsing
