PaperCut - Printers hide and seek

Afternoon All,

 

Has anyone who is running PaperCut ever had issues where a Windows desktop will decide whether or not to show the secure print queue/printer in the list of available printers? We are seeing W10 and 11 machines often forgetting whether or not they are meant to have a printer.

 

All pupils should have a printer.

 

All teachers should have a secure print queue.

 

Any ideas?

I've seen that happen before when a device was logged-in while it was off the network.

Yes we are seeing this. Only on Windows 11 and not very frequently. Not sure if the cause yet.

Do you mind if I poke my nose in here on behalf of the PaperCut product team? Can I just understand your environment?

 

• Are you using Print Deploy to install the print queues or a different method like Intune or AD?
  
• Are these print server queues?
  
• When the print queues are "forgotten", does this happen for all computers or only some?

When print queues are deployed via AD, Intune, or other MDM tools it's not uncommon for those tools to sometimes lag or get it wrong.

 

For an Intune environment, we recommend using Print Deploy to push the print queues to users. With Print Deploy, you push a Print Deploy client via Intune, and the client will reach out to the PaperCut server to get a list of print queues and drivers to install for the user.

Print Deploy can push traditional print server queues, direct print queues (without a print server) or Mobility Print queues. When you opt to deploy Mobility Print queues, Print Deploy will take care of authentication. This means your computers don't necessarily have to be joined to a domain.
