O365 and Google on the same domain

Daft question time! We're 100% O365 at the moment on our domain 'school.com' - however there is a lot of interest in migrating to Google Workspace - so I was thinking I could setup Google using our current domain and simply add/synch a few users manually (or even a whole group using Google directory synch) so they can play with Drive/Docs/Chromebooks etc

 

I understand mail can only flow to one domain and that would stay as 365 - at least until some point in the future, but are there any risks or downsides of using our existing domain just to open a Workspace for a trial? I was hoping to avoid purchasing another domain/subdomain effectively for a test

That's absolutely fine. Just a case of following Google's guidelines, create a DNS record to approve the tenancy and that's it.

 

If you're not using .sch.uk you may need to jump through a few hoops to prove you're a legal school/establishment.

Thanks, I've sort of done this before, but way back then we had an old 'school' based domain so I created a new shiny 'academy' one and we eventually had a switchover - but here they want to keep the domain if and when Google becomes the new cloud - but you know when you start to doubt yourself that you've missed something!

My "MS" school joined a "group" that was mainly Google so I had to set up a Google domain so they could access shared Google drives etc. Was pretty painless. Did the same as you in that I didn't set up GMail as all email still goes through Exchange.

There are several advantages to using the same domain for Google and M365.  

 

1. The users don't have to remember 2 domains or get the 2 mixed up.
2. Any share notification e-mails will come from Google through most 3rd party e-mail providers such as Microsoft totally fine.  Its kind of a good side effect that Google don't promote as they want you to use Gmail.
