Hi Everyone

Despite supplying Apple kit for over 15 years I very rarely actually use any of it so have no experience of iPads out in the wild.

A client of mine has asked.....

"I have just been reading a forum between the ipad 10th gen and ipad air which claims although the air is a year older, it’s a much better device. Would you agree with this or do you feel the 10th gen would be sufficient?"

Any one able to help me with an answer for him?

Thanks

Jon.

The main differences between them are the CPU and GPU.

The Air (5th Gen) has the M1 chip which has 8 CPU cores and 8 GPU cores.

The 10th Gen has the A14 chip which has 6 CPU cores and 4 GPU cores.

How much of a difference in performance this translates to will depend on how they intend to use them. In our school the difference would be negligible as the iPads tend to get used mainly for taking photos and videos.

You can compare specs here if you want to see the other differences:

id be more interested in apples deprecation schedule. the newer one would presumably get longer support from apple as far as updates go

That's absolutely correct and is likely to remain so. However, as others have noted there is an Apple event today that is almost certainly going to change the iPad line-up, so while I would expect the gap between the basic model and the air to continue (after all, they're different tiers of product, not simply what Apple felt like calling stuff the year that thing came out), the details may very well be about to change for the spec at each tier.
