CDH Posted April 29, 2024 Posted April 29, 2024 Is anyone actively using Google Classrooms to manage cover lessons? I am new Cover Manager at a school in Dorset and they currently use email to send cover to covering staff (via me). We use Google Classrooms which seems an obvious and possibly simple approach to improve the current process.
synaesthesia Posted April 29, 2024 Posted April 29, 2024 A common approach is to use a shared drive that the cover users have access to. Therein, create folders for date and class codes inside with the necessary files, and document that for the cover staff to get on quickly 1
jthompson Posted April 29, 2024 Posted April 29, 2024 We're not using Classroom for cover, but we are using a Google shared drive which is working nicely. Staff leaving cover place a copy of cover work into the relevant folder in the shared drive. There is a folder for each day for the next couple of weeks, inside which staff will create a suitably named folder (staff initials and period, typically) to hold their cover work. External cover staff are all provided with a Chromebook and a common 'coverteacher' Google account with which to access the shared folder. That account has prominent shortcuts in Chrome to direct people to the shared drive. The devices we provide are usually old laptops running ChromeOS Flex, so nice and cheap. The shared drive folders for the next couple of weeks are created automatically using some Apps Script, which also tidies away past dates' folders to keep things sensible.

rogerdnixon Posted April 29, 2024 Posted April 29, 2024 If you have Plus licences, you can assign the cover supervisor Classroom visitor permissions and they just jump into the class they are covering and work as normal in Classroom. Works great at our schools.

jthompson Posted April 29, 2024 Posted April 29, 2024 Interesting RE: leveraging the 'Visit a class' feature. Do staff leave specific cover work in their Google Classroom classes then? How do you manage it with external cover staff?
Danp Posted April 29, 2024 Posted April 29, 2024 Interesting RE: leveraging the 'Visit a class' feature. Do staff leave specific cover work in their Google Classroom classes then? How do you manage it with external cover staff? For us, staff have to add their cover work in the year specific Classroom, then anyone can dip in when needed. External, rarely happens for us, but could give that use (supply@) access to Classroom if needed.
