server newbie needs help

Hi

 

I have been trying to setup my first ever server so I can just mess around with it and practice on it.

 

I installed server 2003 and then installed active directory which installed DNS as well.

 

I added a user & computer in Active directory.

 

I then tried to get my Vista laptop to join the domain and got the following error

My setup is that the server & my laptop are both connected to be ADSL router.

 

What does the above error mean as my server knowledge stopped soon after installation

How is the IP address for your Vista laptop configured? My guess is it is getting it via DHCP from your router. You need to make sure that it is using your Windows 2003 server as it's DNS. If not when you try to join it to the domain it will look at your ISP's DNS server which (naturally) will not have any knowledge of your domain.

 

Your Windows 2003 server should be set to forward requests to your ISP's DNS servers.

Yes, my laptop take sit's DNS settings from the router. I will change the DNS servers to the server in the TCP/IP settings but how do I

To set them for your client in Vista:

I managed to add a pc running xp to the domain . This is something totally new for me so I'm happy I got there in the end! (with help of course)

 

I still get the error trying to add my Vista laptop though. I did find this page so I will give these things a try Microsoft Windows Vista Join Domain Troubleshooting firewall error

My next question is how do I create shared drives eg:- h:videos , e:audio etc? The server only has one hard drive in it.

Right click on a folder that you want to share and click on the "Sharing and Security" option. From there you can choose the name you want to share it under and the share rights that you want to allow. These rights do not override NTFS file permissions though.

They can (assuming the resource is being accessed via the network) - NTFS permissions vs share permissions = most restrictive applies

I managed to setup a home drive for a user and shared drives etc. Thanks for the help.

 

On to the next question!

 

I can create a new user as well as a new user group. I created a user group kids and added members to this group. How do I now apply security/policy settings (not sure of correct term) to this group eg. they can't install software, they can't change the IP settings on the pc, they can't change the time etc?

just to note, you won't necessarily be able to lock down all of Windows Vista with server 2008. To do it properly you will need Server 2003
