Private chat disabled but not really

We have discovered an issue with MS Teams chats. Last month we decided to disable the private chat function completely for students, however some students have found that if they search in the teams app for chats they can find chats they have had with staff and reply to them using a pop out window. Teachers can't reply because it says the chat is disabled but it is causing annoyance for many of our staff as students can spam them.

 

The quick fix would be disable the chat function for staff as well so the student will see the "Administrator has disabled chat for this user" but we left this on so they could find any work that students had sent them in the past via private messages.

 

Has anyone seen this and was there another way around it?

As I understand disabling chat only disables the ability to create new chats.

 

We're looking at using retention polices with a retention of just 1 day to see if that removes existing chats, I've created the policy (against some test users) but MS say it takes 7 days to become active.

Hopefully this will work.
