What is your webserver running?

We don't see the point in paying more money to someone to provide a service that we can do ourselves for little extra effort and no cost. Somehow I don't think a web server is high enough up in the priority list to respond to at 3am

 

From my experience the problems crop up when there are problems with everything else and usually something totally different.

 

I guess if you know what you're doing with linux, don't have to worry so much about anyone other than your school, etc... then it's easy enough to do.. I'd definitely go with a managed service though if you don't have the time to learn the ropes and/or have a mission critical site that can't afford to go down when you're on holiday (yeah, I know, chance would be a fine thing )

The benefits far outweight the potential problems, so for the time being we will continue to host it ourselves

Of course managed services don't guarantee solid uptime and trouble free sailing either, and in some cases would be faster to fix ones-self.

Am i the only one looking to host on an Xserve? Apache on OS X Server will be what's running ours i hope when i get round to sorting out the security and permission requirements and reading up on the MySQL security as well. A lot of work to get done for me.

 

I run a Power Mac G5 (dual 1.8GHz with OSX Client version) as a very capable and reliable AMP server.
