Hi, is there any reason NOT to start the September academic year before the start of term? We have a system that rolls up its new academic years overnight; I want to get it in place in advance of the INSET Day. So basically, will it conflict if the YEAR starts Sept 1 (which this year is a Sunday anyway) but then INSET is Mon 2 and Start of school on Tue 3? My instinct is it should be fine, but don't want to mess up if it can't cope with the start of term being identical to the start of the academic year. Thanks!

This is really best practice. We were always told to start academic year on 1st Sept regardless. Its distinct from term dates, which can be any start date within that year. Don't use SIMS anymore but in that situation I would have either started term on the 3rd, or on the 2nd with 2nd marked as inset and students need not attend.

I always start the new year on 1st Sept and add in INSET / holidays etc to pad out until the start of the term; we then bring in Y7 & Y12 on day one with everyone else starting on day two.

 

Never had a problem doing this.
