Synology DiskStation DS923+ - Google Workspace backup of the backup

Hi,

 

I am thinking about investing in a DiskStation DS923+ to backup all the Google Workspace accounts, but have few questions.

 

If I use the built in Google Workspace backup system to backup to its internal ?tb drives, can I also use the device to make an offsite backup to Wasabi or an external USB drive.

 

I am also wondering what happens if the device itself dies, but the drives are OK, can you just get another device (same make model) pop the old drive in and off you go?

So reading through that link, it seems hyper backup can do system and file backups to both an external drive or wasabi.

 

Is there anyone on edugeek doing this?

 

Has anyone had the disks go pop and needed to restore from a hyper backup?

Use a redundant disk config e.g. Raid 10 / Raid 5 / Raid 6 (or one of synologys own versions) and buy an extra disk or two to keep in stock, if a disk dies you can pop an new one in and auto rebuild the array no need to restore the box from scratch.

Yes, you can use Hyper Backup to backup to an S3 storage instance (it can take a while just FYI)

 

I'm not sure about if the device dies - we have multiple devices that replicate in addition to offloading so are not reliant on 1 device. I am sure you can export the device configuration within the settings.

Ohh thanks for pointing that out.

 

So it looks like snapshot or buying another NAS are the only other options.

 

Do you know if Snapshot Replication works to an external USB device? I know some NAS systems don't really like working with external USB drives.

we have a rs1221 which is our google backup and i have a DS420 and a DS423 we do snapshot replication to one switch it off - turn the other one on then start the replication to the other... so on and so fourth.

It is really really slow its like over a week each its pittiling along at KBs when it does the active backup for business (VMs) its fast that just takes hours. i think its loads of small files
