Which version of Veeam backup software do I need?

Been having a bad week backup wise and looking for a quick fix.

 

I have one host server running 2 VMs. The host backs up both VM's to an older server acting as an iSCSI target.

 

I was thinking of testing Veeam Community Edition, but on the free downloads page they have 2 options.

Veeam Backup & Replication Community Edition. I have it running as its own VM (so making for 3 VMs in your case), just to keep everything separated out.

So it doesn't just install onto the host OS?

Do I need to install another version of Windows server as a VM to run it?

Sure, you can just install it on your VM host machine. I put it on its own dedicated Windows VM to keep it separated from the VM Host role, but I don't think there should be any problem combining the two.

Only thing to note, if your VM host goes down, you will need to spin up VEEAM on another machine in order to access the backups, also be mindful of encryption when doing this, no key, no backups. Dealt with one last year
