At one site dozens of iPads are deployed as shared devices, all logging into the same account. (Long story).

 

At present all apps are freebies but a "paid" in-app subscription is now being mooted with the teacher reasoning that "one logon, so just pay once". I'm none too convinced that this is allowed. Any thoughts/advice?

Absolutely not, you are breaking app store licensing rules and just imagine what it is possible to be shared amongst all those iPads using the same Personal Apple ID? Photo's, notes, iCloud Keychain logins, bookmarked web sites and loads more that is a massive security risk

 

Get every Apple ID removed from the iPads asap, they do not require any Apple ID to get apps free or otherwise...

Sorry, probably not using the correct "Applespeak". All pads are set up as shared devices in an MDM and don't require signing into (so presumably use the same account somewhere down the line). Elsewhere today, so can't check what they say.

In order to buy a "paid for" app you need to buy this via Apps and Books in Apple School Manager not the App Store, this is then pushed via your MDM. If your iPads are a shared classroom device, and not "Apple's Shared iPad" then they don't use the same account whatsoever. To get a paid for app you will need to either attach a school credit card to the ASM account or buy VPP Credit from an AAES Reseller, details below.

AFAICT PhotoDirector doesn't have an EDU version. The AppStore is blocked already, thankfully!

This is incorrect, in fact most of Cyberlinks macOS and iOS apps are free of charge in ASM, they are not bought via the App Store for volume licencing

 

They may be only very basic with IAP required.

Though if a cost is involved, I can't see that the "one month, one user sub to cover the whole school" fantasy will be on the table!

its all done in asm, they basically send you a custom app that gets assigned to your account in asm and becomes assignable, no idea how theyd licence or one off charge it - presumable they would sell you some bulk licences on a one off or annual payment or they remove the app?

 

over covid the LGFL assigned us their web filter app in this fashion

This is utter rubbish, Showbie and Seesaw and hundreds of other app developers provide a subscription ontop of the free app that you buy, when you enter the key into the app it turns on all the Pro features. all done outside of the Apps and Books in ASM.

The app is not made for iPadOS anyway, only macOS and iOS.
