Hello, has anyone had any luck setting a custom logon image in Windows 11? This is the background you see around the username/password log in box.

FYI We have set:

Computer GPO - "Force a specific default lock screen and logon image" pointing it to a jpg on C:

Registry key DisableLogonBackgroundImage = 1

Prevent changing lock screen and logon image - Enabled

Prevent enabling lock screen camera Enabled - Enabled

Prevent enabling lock screen slide show - Enabled

We have removed the Lock screen which works OK

It just shows a grainy black image - any ideas?

Thanks

I have no idea what I'm talking about as I've never used this, but what does this reg key do?

Registry key DisableLogonBackgroundImage = 1

It may be a funny Microsoft quirk, or just bad english/syntax (or just the way I'm reading it)...

But setting it to '1' reads to me like this would disable the image, so you only see a blank, coloured background.

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System

DWORD

DisableLogonBackgroundImage

0 or delete = enable

1 = disable"

I got rid of the lock screen, replaced the sad cyclops with our school logo, replaced Other User with our school name and set the logon page background to change every hour (cycles through a selection of photos of the school). I’ll have a look on Monday and will let you know what settings and policies I push out.

Lock screen changing is also dependent on OS version. I fell foul of this a long time ago.

Windows education version works easily via gpo.

You can also change the Windows version by using a script to change the kms key to an edu key, then activate using your kms key using you KMS key on your DC / kms server.

Sorry I've taken so long, was harder than I thought putting time aside! Hopefully the following link works, I've documented the process I've setup here. Let me know if the link doesn't work.

Is this possible to deploy via Intune?

Probably, it’s mainly just file replacements. We’re not an InTune environment, so I can’t 100% confirm sorry.

We do this in intune, I find it easier to have the lockscreen JPG on the machine itself. I create a SYSTEM WIN32 package containing my lockscreen.jpg and a batch file. This is the batch file:

@echo off
xcopy %~dp0lockscreen.jpg "C:\windows\web\screen\" /C /Q /H /R /Y
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PersonalizationCSP" /v LockScreenImagePath /t REG_SZ /d "C:\windows\web\screen\lockscreen.jpg" /f /reg:64
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PersonalizationCSP" /v LockScreenImageUrl /t REG_SZ /d "file:///C:\windows\web\screen\lockscreen.jpg" /f /reg:64
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PersonalizationCSP" /v LockScreenImageStatus /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f /reg:64

detection rule consists of file check and reg keys.

For the lockscreen settings this is a USER WIN32 - just a batch file (this has a couple of extras you dont need such as start menu button moving to the left and I set an initial lilac background):

@echo off
reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Notifications\Settings" /v NOC_GLOBAL_SETTING_ALLOW_TOASTS_ABOVE_LOCK /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f /reg:64
reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Notifications\Settings" /v RotatingLockScreenOverlayEnabled /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f /reg:64
reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Notifications\Settings" /v "SubscribedContent-338387Enabled" /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f /reg:64
