ITGuyNW Posted December 12, 2023 Posted December 12, 2023 Hi all We have a laptop trolley that has started tripping the electric whenever its plugged in. Checked all the usual but it only seems to happen when the trolley has been wheeled to a class and back, so I assume its static build up, which is odd. Anyone else ever had theirs do this?
DaveTheTech Posted December 12, 2023 Posted December 12, 2023 Couple of thoughts. Have you tried on a different ring / on a circuit that you know isn't at capacity? Could it be the spike in load that is causing it to trip? Does this happen when you dont plug the laptops in? 1
ITGuyNW Posted December 12, 2023 Author Posted December 12, 2023 It's being plugged into a ring that has a single PC plugged in, that's it. Next time it's wheeled in, I'll try plugging it in without any laptops plugged in. Might be a case of trial and error..
dhicks Posted December 12, 2023 Posted December 12, 2023 Anyone else ever had theirs do this? Hmm. No, not this specifically, although we did have some circuits in the building that were tripping out on a regular basis. Our laptop charging cabinets did each have 10 individual power supplies, one per laptop, crammed in the top - after replacing those with proper multi-way USB charging units we don't seem to have a problem any more. Not sure if it was total power draw or too many individual power supplies on the one circuit - seemingly having too many AC-to-DC converters on one circuit can cause modern circuit breakers to trip, although I'm a bit hazy on the exact details of why. 1
StevieM Posted December 12, 2023 Posted December 12, 2023 I know this might sound a bit daft but have you checked the actual plug? We've had problems with our iPad trolleys in the past when people have tried to wheel them away while they were still plugged into the mains, loosening the wires inside the plug. Cue sparks flying and mains tripping when they were plugged back in. Just a thought. 2
PotNoodleTech Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 Has it been PAT tested recently? PAT test will tell you if there's anything weird going on with regards to earth leakage or shorting etc. 1
