Some of our Infants/Primary schools have opted to subscribe to Securus Monitoring and Filtering

https://www.securus-software.com/

Anyone used this before? I followed the documentation (https://securus-software.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/SSKB/pages/197052/Securus+NET+Installation+Guide) and its talking about installing a linux based VM on our host server whcih i have done, but i am not entirely sure what the point or the purpose of this VM is for? As one of the IT teachers at the school decided just to install the Securus MSI client on a few laptops prior to the VM being installed and it all worked as expected the reporting and everything else

School is using an Active Directory Server and users just login against AD

Anyone know what the point or purpose of this Linux VM is please?

It's only really for iOS/Android etc

As you can't monitor them "fully" with local clients, they work by passing their traffic via the VM, which effectively decrypts the data, recreates screenshots etc via packets blah blah

If you only need it for Windows/Chromebooks etc you don't need that

Edit - Official wording:

NET resides at the network level, to provide multi-platform safeguarding coverage for ALL devices connected to your establishment by Wi-Fi. This includes students’ own devices as part of BYOD schemes such as iOS, Chromebooks & Android tablets or smart phones.

Securus NET offers a unique solution that can generate capture images on any device without the need to install software onto it. NET will detect inappropriate or concerning activity on the network, enabling your staff to respond, educate and transform behaviour.

NET, once installed, sits as the effective middleman on the network. Authenticated machines using the network would communicate through the NET proxy service. Packets are subject to analysis where words and phrases are matched against the proprietary dictionary of terms.
