Fault reporting?

We're wondering about an easier method for staff to report errors in IT rooms.

 

We've invented a screen (web-page? Microsoft Form? Spreadsheet)? - that shows the room layout - and staff could click on the computer to report a fault with it?

 

does this exist! Anyone seen anything like this?

If you did, you could easily sell this to schools!

 

 

 

YMMV and this is my own 2 cents - But at some point teachers should act like the professionals they're supposed to be and follow the rules set out to report issues.

 

The rules and processes are in place as 1) they work and 2) keep everything flowing smoothly and 3) track/audit misuse and damage and 4) show HOW MUCH WORK the IT team does behind doors to keep the systems running.

 

Bear in mind we don't do this to be unhelpful as we have to do this for the above reasons.

 

They know what classroom and block they're in, as they have to be in that room to teach the students. So "I don't know" doesn't fly with me.

Workstation number labels and an email-based helpdesk. That's about as easy as it gets for staff in the room. Anything else, be it a web form or clickable floorplan, is just more clicking to pull them out of the job of teaching, imho.

No point over complicating things. As above, make sure all computers are numbered / labelled. email helpdesk is easiest & least confusing for staff

We do have an email based help-desk, we have a plan for each room with computer numbers - so that ought to work. We find stickers on computers get pulled off.

 

We are about to create a signing in / out of the room checklist - so that staff will try harder to check the computers at the beginning and end of their lessons - we don't have time for the IT team to check the rooms - but obviously we do have time to go and fix problems. One day we'll have another IT technician and then we might be able to be a little more pro-active, but applicants for junior technicians are hard to find.

Labels get pulled off despite all our attempts. We put them back on again, they get pulled off again. Ultimately IMHO that's down to student behaviour/classroom management and teachers/Pastoral to sort.

 

If you really want to get into it - As part of DFe teacher standards (#7 - Manage behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment) - so they're not doing their job by letting this happen. One reason why teachers get paid far more because of upholding these 'professional standards'.

 

As the labels don't remove themselves do they?

 

Been there done that, got the T-shirt with the room checks - Honestly... Waste of your time, won't be recognised as being proactive etc. Equipment doesn't randomly break these days as much as it used do.

As the keyboards and mice don't randomly loose keys during the day themselves, do they?

 

The signing in and out should be an admin thing, not IT.

Good luck and we ALL feel your pain with this. Just keep the IT stuff working. Anything else is down to teachers and SLT to do their jobs.

I think I'm hoping that this is about persuading the teachers to keep their side of the bargain in keeping an eye on the room - which is an admin task (though might be better if IT produced the room layout map) - and really this is school behaviour problem - so not an IT problem either! Also on the verge of an improved CCTV system - so hoping that we'll have a better chance to find the culprits (which again - ideally the new CCTV system is so easy that SLT can use it...)
