Anyone tried changing the shell from Explorer.exe to a in-house solution such as an HTA file? so that they dont have start menus, etc but just a list of icons/links of what they can have access to?

In my previous job i changed the shell to IE to create a make-shift Internet Kiosk...

Obviously i need something a bit more "advanced" for the school.

Never done it, but it's a good idea and alternative to GPOs. You could use custom menus for something like GeoShell, Litestep, or other misc. shells (shellcity.net :p)

CSE used this method to lockdown Windows 98. Was a great idea untill you had to to get hardware / software to run that normally ran automatically with explorer.

With XP their GUI ran with explorer.

Hi,

Coded this some years ago. The idea behind it was to use it in primary schools where kid couldn’t get the hang of start menus!!!

Use Easy Start Manager to mange the es.ini file. Right click on a button to remove it and drag any short-cut from you start menu to the grayish area in the top left hand corner and then click add button to add a button.

Easy Starter student is well for the student end, the application will need the es.ini file.

google for spchapi and lhttseng for sound….you will see what I mean.

Cheers
