ok when i get home i will run the local ssh and then try and ping the ip and will then note down the results from ifconfig and post it here.

Ok, localssh works fine, however I cant ping via my physical machine, I get timed out.

So given your vm is on the 10.* range and your PC is on the 192.* it's unlikely without some clever routing it will work.

 

I suggest you look in VMWare at what network settings you assigned for your VM. I'd think you've set Host-Only and it needs to be Bridged so it gets an IP 192.x.x.x from your DHCP(Router?).

I've had a quick look at the manual but without downloading and installing its difficult to troubleshoot.

 

It would appear that in NAT mode that there are some known issues surrounding the ICMP implementation but it shouldn't be an issue here.

 

OK, forgetting VirtualBox for a minute, run

 

iptables -L

 

and report that back, along with checking

 

system-config-securitylevel

 

to ensure SELinux and the Firewall are disabled.

I am using VirtualBox.

 

I use VirtualBox on my home Windows XP Home machine. Did the VirtualBox network bridge install okay - under "Network Connections" (or whatever the heck the Vista equivalent is these days) do you have connections labelled "VirtualBox Host Interface 1" and "Network Bridge" or similar, and does your Local Area Connection connection status read "Connected, Bridged"?

 

A network "bridge" is basically the software equivalent of a switch - you're plugging a bunch of network connections (one real, others virtual) into a virtual switch so your virtual connections can all share your real connection.
