Air Conditioning Question

Hey All,

 

Sorry I didn't know which best place to put this so thought Hardware was appropriate but please move as necessary.

 

Currently have two air conditioning units in our server room and recently was made aware that about 2 weeks ago they fitted new Air Conditioning units in some of the staff members office's. I'm no expert when it comes to Air Con but I remember in my last place there was something about they shouldn't add additional air conditioning units to the current setup for offices because if they're turned to produce heat in the winter for the offices it could effect how cool the server room's air con can become.

 

Can I just check if this is the case or have I got this totally wrong and there won't be an issue. I haven't brought it up with management yet as I wasn't fully sure.

Have they added more indoor units to the same outdoor unit as your server room?

If they are all coming off the same outdoor unit then your assumption is correct.

As @tech-man said, if they're off the same outdoor unit they may cause issues. I dunno about being turned to make heat, but certainly there's only a set amount of heat the outdoor unit can dissipate, so if you have a hot day and the staff members have the AC cranked up, you might find that the air con in the server room struggles

How many additional units have they fitted? If you have concerns I would raise it with the site / management.

 

The aircon fitters surely would have done a sitemap of the current set up anyway & would not have gone ahead if there were going to be bottlenecks on the system?

This, I don't know. We have a general operations meeting tomorrow and I was thinking about asking this question then whilst raising my concerns.

Thanks for confirming. Do you know whether it makes a significant difference or will it still be within 'okay' parameters?

Ah, this would make sense. So actually if they where set to generate heat I would presume it'd have the opposite effect as the air con units will then be used to dissipate heat from the server room but additional cooling would put more strain on the system thus making them all overall warmer?

Do you think it'd be worth asking in the meeting this question to find out whether a proper survey was carried out? With the state they left the server room in, I have high doubts they're very good. Walked in on Thursday to find one of the ceiling tiles had been smashed to pieces and was just left, this is how I found out about the new air con install.

 

I told the site manager straight away as my concern was that there's a leak somewhere above which may have damaged the tiles making them snap under the water ingress and their own weight but he seems to think everything is fine and looked at it to say it could have been done by the air con engineers but even if they've left it in that state it's pretty poor. I'm going to have to tidy it all up when I'm next in and find out where there's cleaning stuff as no one else seems to be bothered to do it. I'm also a bit worried about the dust that's in the air from the tiles breaking.

I mean if all of the other units are indeed plumbed into the same place, the additional load could cause temperatures to rise in the server room..

I know, bit of a mess. I'd expect them to at least clear up after them if they broke it.. if they didn't there's a leak and that's more concerning. All of which I've raised now to my LM.

I don't know myself exactly how many there where in the first instance. I would presume the installers would have to do a survey to ensure it wouldn't effect the server room but again I'm questioning their professionalism after I've seen the mess of the server room.

 

I think it might end up being a trial and error thing. I WFH but in the office tomorrow so will give it a go.

Multi splits - either heat or cool. Server room I would have on a dedicated unit.
