SIM Server Thermometers

Does anyone use SIM card thermometers for their server room monitoring? Our power can be.. interesting to say the least. There are obviously a variety of SMS/SMTP ethernet thermometers we can go for, but if we loose power to the internet before the temperature gets too much we would like a failsafe.

 

Recommendations welcomed.

Temperature sensors are often optional accessories of a UPS. We have ours deployed so our internet stays up with the servers until the UPS gives out, which affords us the opportunity to take action. The UPS handles sending the alerts to us. If the UPS can't get the message out, then we can't remote in either ::shrug::

If all the power is on, that would work. Our Router is unfortunately 1/4 mile from the server room in another building at the bottom of a hill (on a UPS of course). We know we get about 30 minutes before that goes off. If everything goes out at different times... We're trying to cover all possibilities if we can.

If the power goes out, you're on a timer to a graceful shutdown.. so monitoring the temperature is moot at that point unless your runtime is measured in hours? But I'd have thought that over temperature alarm on a UPS could be configured to trigger a graceful shutdown or shedding of load too so...

 

but to return to your actual question: I have no idea about SIM based temperature sensors.

 

 

FWIW we don't shut down on over temperature and we've had things running for hours at 43C+ on more than one occasion (air-con failure, power still on), and I would say it's never done anything any harm, but we've had two random server failures (out of six) and half a dozen disks go (out of 40) over the 10 years we've been running the facilities (all the server/storage assets are the same age) so take that with a pinch of salt, YMMV etc etc.

We've had the air-con unit fail and the new one hadn't been setup correctly to come back on with the power. Thus our desire to cover as many options as possible.

I've got UniFi UP Sense devices in all server rooms. You can configure them to send you temperature, humidity, motion and light alerts. The device also come with door sensor so you can receive alerts whenever someone opens up server door.

 

They are battery operated and only work UniFi 6 Pro or Long Range APs via UniFi Protect App, so this is not for everyone.

The software is a bit clunky but it works well. No sim tho all alerts by email.
