Is there any application, free or paid, running under Windows 10, that performs dictation (voice-to-text) without requiring an internet connection? Edited by ZeroHour

Hi Wobbles,

I'm currently setting up Dragon Naturally Speaking with an exam laptop which doesn't have an internet connection. Very good bit of software.

Dragon seems to be the one that's offline - exam laptops is exactly what im looking into
Yeah most dictation services including word/365 require an internet connection. Dragon is the only one i've seen so far that will work offline.

I was about to boast about just using the dictate feature addin for word but it seems they've finally killed it.

it was a nice end around the need to use the o365 version of word.

oh well dragon it is.

EDIT: you could disable edge / chrome and still allow internet access for the dictation feature...but this is moot now.

Or switch to Mac. I'm SHOCKED, and honestly quite angry to learn you can't use dictation without internet access – Another TERRIBLE accessibility standard on Windows.

In the end we went with ReadWrite and that worked out well for us but it was just a single student for a limited time so couldn't go wrong really

Apple for the longest while used Nuance technology under the hood, which is why their in-box dictation was so good. Microsoft purchased it (the company) recently so I don't know where that leaves anyone in the long term. With Microsoft's recent history of pulling features and re-releasing them with the AI/CoPilot branding as paid extras I am not at all hopeful.
